I don't care who's list says what. In my opinion Musial is top 5 and Rose is top 50. I want to say Rose is top 25, but even I feel that's stratching it just a bit. I feel more comfortable putting him in the top 50. Other than that I don't care who is where on the list ;)

Rose is definitely a top 50 player in my mind, but Musial top 5? There is no doubt that Stan the Man belongs among the greatest players of all time, but there is no way he is a top 5 player. Who does he beat out of Mays, Mantle, Ruth, Williams, Cobb, Gehrig, Foxx, Dimaggio, etc. I think Stan is firmly within the top 15, but not in the top 10.

Past issues or what not, I find it comical that a guy can just post a few stats of some guy that played back in the 1880's and get all your guys' ******* up in a bunch. Seriously, you guys take yourselves too seriously.

Have fun with the list Bo.

I think he beats out Foxx, Gehrig and Dimaggio. Definitely Mantle. IMO. Hey, I'm a New Yorker and I'll be the first to say that so many Yankees are on the "Top" lists because they were Yankees first, skill second.

I'd say Ruth, Mays, Williams, Cobb and Musial. That's my top 5.

If you go off the top of your head Musial probably doesn't pop up but browse baseball-reference.com for a couple of minutes and his stats are pretty mind numbing.

Baseball reference lists Musial as
5th all time Black ink
3rd all time Grey ink
4th all time Career HOF standard
1st all time Hall of Fame monitor

Explanations of each indicator can be found here: http://www.baseball-reference.com/about/leader_glossary.shtml#black_ink
17 times in the top 5 batting AVG (Only Cobb ties him)

There is no doubt that he is among the best players of all time. The Ink tests are really irrelevant comparing players across generations, however, because they measure performance relative only to a players era in which they played. The HOF scores are a better indication of career abilities measured across eras, but Stan gets a significant advantage due to the fact that he played 22 seasons. There is no doubt that he belongs in the top 15, but I cannot see him in the top 5 under any circumstances.

24 time All Star

That's incredible to me. Every time I see that stat I'm blown away.

They played 2 games a year for a few years in the late 50's - was he an All-Star in 24 seasons?

That's a good point that I hadn't considered....

24× All-Star selection (1943, 1944, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1959², 1960, 1960², 1961, 1961², 1962, 1962², 1963)

Looks like he went to two all star games in one year four times.

So a mere 20 seasons worth of all star games.

Some of the comments in this thread further show why cgilmo needed to post the "baseball board needs to be less hostile" topic.

bodiaz, you better include Sosa somewhere! :p

Joss is one hall of famer that I really enjoy reading about. He was such an incredible ball player in those nine seasons (seven full seasons). Who knows, if he wouldn't have gotten sick, would the Cy Young award be called the Addie Joss award? Without sickness, he would have reached 300 wins no problem, but where would his ERA be? Would he have been the only 20th century pitcher besides Ed Walsh with a career ERA under two? So many great questions and unknowns.
