Mariners didn't have much this year, but in Brendan Ryan they did have the best defensive shortstop in baseball...too bad he didn't get recognized for it from this joke of a committee...

Brendan Ryan is a great defensive SS, but please, state your arguments against JJ Hardy. You really can't. Hardy has Ryan beat in every category except dWar (and I"m not sure how that's even possible).

Apparently Barney was 3rd in the NL in Range Factor at 2B and Brandon Phillips wasn't even in the top 5 - according to baseball-reference.com. 1st was Omar Infante when he was on the Marlins and 2nd was Descalso of the Cardinals.

Which means that Barney had the best rating of players who started for a full season in the NL. Plus, Barney broke Sandberg's NL record for consecutive games without an error and ended up with 141 consecutive errorless games. Thus he has the best range and the most consistent defensive performance. It's really a no brainer.

Joke of a committee? The managers and coaches voted. Who better than them, who watch every play intently, to vote?
Who would you rather vote? Biased fans? Writers, many of whom barely watch games?

Range Factor has nothing to do with a player's range. It's putouts and assists / games played.

If you look at the best seasons ever RF wise, they are almost all in the dead ball era because the amount of chances infielders had.
