At the start of a new season.

New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole to have Tommy John surgery

Crap like this just chaps my ass. It is a ****** bag move. And happens all the time. I am getting sick of it.
He knew he had a problem last year. what a DICK!

They don't wait to have surgery. They pitch through discomfort and pain routinely provided it's medically unremarkable. They pitch, then have their rest period and off-day workouts and assessments. Same thing during Spring Training - they shake the rust off and get back into the rhythm, and they communicate with team medical staff if they notice any new symptoms. Once a tear of the UCL is detected, however minor it is, it's not going to heal without surgery. That's why, for decades prior to Tommy John, this was a career-ending injury. A guy like Gerrit Cole is just doing his job for as long as he possibly can, and his only option at this point is to keep throwing until the UCL completely snaps and he's toast, or get surgery to repair it and come back next year.
