Depends on the situation. If he's only signing for an hour or two and there is a zoo of people wanting items signed at $175/per, then I can see a single color/single type pen so he's not futzing around trying to get the ink color and pen type straight when signing someone's item.
If there is only mild interest at $175/per and he's staying until the last paid fan's item is signed, then maybe he can afford a few more secs of time per item to keep track of blue/black/red inks and sharpie/staedtler pens.
From what I have seen...most paid signings are pretty orchestrated. They only sell a certain amount of tickets so that they have plenty of time to get through everyone. And I have also heard they can make deals with the player where it might be a minimum of 2 hours(for example) but not to exceed 4 hours(another hypothetical example) where the first two hours are guaranteed to be paid to the athlete but each extra hour(lets say hours 3 and 4) are paid for on an as needed basis. That way ...lets say it takes 4 hours to get through 500 people. And you have 500 auto tickets for sale. You might expect enough people for at least a minimum of two hours worth. But if more people show up than that...you can still cover your rear(as the promoter) and guarantee that the athlete will stay and continue to sign autographs.
Some athletes will even just ask for a time slot of 2 straight hours and ask to be guaranteed to be paid for the two hours whether they are actually signing the whole full time or not. Each athlete is different. But anyone charging that much for an auto should be intelligent enough to handle the crowd and make sure they are somewhat happy with the product. I am still of the belief that one day...Willie Mays and his signing habits will come back to bite Tristar on the rear when the wrong guy gets ticked off and the wrong piece of memorabilia gets messed up. $300 might not be a big deal if you are getting him on a ball or bat and he messes it up a little. But if he messed up a multi signed item or something vintage...now the price just skyrocketed when you are talking about possible damages. Now I'm not a lawyer and have no idea if it would hold up but if the wrong person got peeved...I do believe they would push that envelope.
