On this day 16 years ago we lost Darryl Kile.

16 years ago today, Chicago Cubs manager Joe Girardi tearfully announced to a packed Wrigley Field that the game had been postponed due to a death in the Cardinals family.

That death, less than a week removed from losing legendary St. Louis announcer Jack Buck, was Cardinals starting pitcher Darryl Kile, at the age of 33.

My favorite piece of Cardinals memorabilia is definitely my Darryl Kile jersey.

I remember watching that game and watching Girardi talk to the crowd and couldn't believe it. So sad.

I remember exactly what I was doing when I received the phone call about DK.

My girlfriend at the time, her dad owned a Bonanza Steakhouse and I was helping him out and running the register on that busy Saturday.

He called me at the store around 1:00 or so and told me that Kile had passed and the game was postponed.

It was the first time in 23 years that a player had died in the middle of the season; in 1979, Yankees catcher Thurman Munson perished in a plane crash.

I misspoke earlier when I called Girardi the Cubs manager at the time. He was the catcher.
