I don't remember if this has been done before and if it has my bad. I was reading another thread where someone was talking about "Pogo Joe" and it got me to thinking about athlete nicknames. Current ones seem lacking to me (sorry A-Rod fans) but there have been some great ones in the past, and maybe some good current ones have slipped past me. What are your faves?

Death to Flying Things (I think got that one right, but I may have misremembered)

And cuz I know someone might say it....The Hawk is an okay nickname too

Good thread!

I've always thought the older nicknames were classic and (for lack of a better word) elegant. Ted Williams "The Splendid Splinter", Willie Mays "The Say Hey Kid", and James Thomas "Cool Papa" Bell.

Of course one of my favorites is John Olerud "The Big Rude", a play on the fact that he is mild-mannered and soft-spoken.

Before "The Big Hurt" Frank Thomas, there was simply "Big" Frank.

This is the only nickname inscription pre-Big Hurt that I've ever seen.
