Hey guys. I'm a big time lurker on the boards and usually don't post but I've come across some mentions on some posts that suggest putting cards in one touch magnetic holders can damage cards, especially chrome cards, and it's freaking me out. Any truth to this? Hate to see my collection get ruined. Sorry if this has already been discussed but not too familiar on how to search old threads and figured just easier to ask.

I hear of non-recessed screw down holders doing damage, but not much mention of any type of recessed holder doing damage. Only problem I sometimes run into is placing a Chrome card, that has a natural bow/bend and wont sit flat in the recessed area, can easily get clamped down on an edge and/or corner

I dont like one touches at all. I use top loaders or cardsavers for a number of reasons
1) one touches allow for too much movement and the card's edges can be damaged. I feel cards are more secure in a top loader.
2) too expensive to put cards in the one touch
3) if you drop it you quite possibly just ruined a card.
These are just my personal preference and I wouldn't freak out about it.

Thanks. Makes me feel alot better. I thought maybe there was some horror story about chrome cards sticking to the surface or something else horrible like that.

In total agreement here. I've only used them for super - thick cards, but even then would prefer to use top-loads.

there is, usually with screwdowns reefed down to tight, but even one touches can be bad
with an older card in to warm an enviroment. the surface will stick to the top of the holder.
sleeve and toploader is truly the only 100% safe way, providing you dont drop it in a puddle

I did a test a few years ago.

I put a cards in a Penny Sleeve / Toploader / Team Bag and a card in a One Touch / BCW Team Bag. I dropped the cards from arm height on several different surfaces, including concrete. Nothing.

I resorted to throwing them at a set of concrete stairs. The toploader shattered, and the One Touch cracked. The card in the toploader was damaged, but not the one in the one touch. However, I don't think anyone spends too much time throwing their PC at the stairs.

And personally, I HATE thick cards in Penny Sleeves, even the extra large penny sleeves. It seems like there is way to much pressure put on the bottom corners.

On cards I'm keeping long term, I recommend card in a penny sleeve, then placed inside a new topload, then placed inside a team bag. Triple protection, plus the team bag helps keep the topload from getting all scratched up. For higher value cards I want to display in one touch magnetic I also put it inside a team bag to keep the magnetic from coming apart and getting scratched up.

On cards I'm looking to move, I use all the above but substitute in older/used toploads or magnetics.

YOU KNOW
if you want the card to remain in similar shape the for the rest of time, just hold it by the edges and never let go and never go outside or off your bed even. just hold it

Not sure why fans of toploaders make a big list of reasons that one-touches are worse than toploader, yet ignore the obvious fact that toploaders are very flimsy and offer very little protection from cards being bent

In most cases I think it's just an aesthetic preference. Both offer fair enough protection, arguments one way or another are always a stretch IMO. Who handles their cards so much that it is an issue one way or another? All I'd say is if you're going to grade in the future go toploader route because of the penny sleeve, otherwise its a push

I use magnetic holders for thick cards, and I have a team bag that fits the magnetic holder perfectly. For thinner cards - I prefer top loaders I am always a little worried about edges getting damaged.

non recessed screwdowns are the worst thing for cards. moisture gets trapped between the surface and the scredown and if left like that long enough it will stick to the screwdown causing serious damage. One touches are great for cards. I have never seen an edge get damaged in one and if you feel movement is a problem fold up some penny sleeves between the back of the card and the the screwdown it move move anymore and you have max protection

I'm trying to figure out how people think edges are going to get damaged in a One-Touch

A lot of the time, the smaller cards such as a Bowman - the card moves around. I'd rather not risk it.

ok but what are you people doing w/ your cards that they bounce around?
I don't ship cards in 1 touches..and I don't exercise while holding my cards...so I don't see an issue.

I think the only time that edges would get ruined in a one touch is if the one touch is too big for the card, offering more movement room. I had this happen accidently. I had my dad pick me up some one touches because I don't have any near me and I had a card that I wanted to display, not high dollar but like its looks, and he picked up the wron size on accident so I placed it in there but had planned on getting it in the right sized holder within the next week when I was going to have a chance to stop at an LCS. Well, I forgot to switch the holders and the edges started to chip because I had to move my cards around some. I don't think it would have been that noticeable if the card wasn't a 2010 Topps Tribute black parallel where the edges are completely black. Good thing the card is staying in my PC

Man....I went toploaders for my autos. I'll still use a one touch for expensive or really primo cards but they just cost too damn much. I had this fear of autos sticking to penny sleeves. But with some input from the board, I've tried it. That was my only real worry. Otherwise, I've got no problem using toploaders. I just had so many IP autos on cards because I decided to go that route when getting autos now. I needed something in the neighborhood of like 100+ one touches. Used to be it was no problem buying 5 here, 10 there. But when I let it accumulate a while, plus figured how much additional space a 100 one touches would take up, and how much money it would cost just to buy them...I really need to second guess myself. And we aren't talking scrub IP autos on all of the cards. I've got several HOF'ers on them. So these aren't cards I want screwed up. I just went with toploaders for them.

As far as edges....man, you really have to shake the hell out of them for them to cause damage. Or...maybe you aren't using the right size?
