what the hell you can't even type ***** now. He's not a name that the average fan knows about, but Willard Brown was one of the great homerun hitters in the ***** Leagues and Puerto Rican Leagues and was voted to the Hall of Fame in 2006.
Additionally, Willard Brown was one of a very small number of black players to play in the Majors in 1947. The St Louis Browns signed him and Hank Thompson to very brief stints, but neither lasted long. Thompson was signed to the Giants in 1949 after a couple more seasons in the ***** Leagues, but Brown never made it back to the Majors. It is a huge shame, because most fans never got a chance to see a truly great player.
Here is a rare Type I photo from his brief stint with the Browns.

Love that Mattingly.2005 UD Ultimate Signature Collection Immortal Inscriptions Don Mattingly /75 -- This remains a landmark set after 20 years. A few collectors were chasing a master set on Beckett and here on FCB when it was released and so this was always on my radar. Immortal Inscriptions is a standout from this product and Mattingly is the lone Yankee in the subset. I don't recall inscriptions being done nicer than this in future years. If so, please share!
This cost a bit more than the standard Mattingly autographed card, but surprinsingly not much more than sending a card into to be signed by Mattingly at a local signing with an inscription fee. That is my "collector math" to justify such a purchase.
