Relics? I thought they were game used?

Could someone clue me in on this...

I am seeing listings of cards that (to me) look like regular "game used" cards being called "Relics". Did i miss the bus on new terminology, or is it really different than the game used we have been buying for years?

Not sure what you're asking...regular "game used" cards have also been called "relic cards" as a generic term interchangeably for years. However as more and more "event used" and "seat relics" are distributed I think a more specific use of terms will evolve

"Relic" means all they can do is tie the player to the object embedded - without having to worry about such trivial details as what the object actually is.

I am very weary of relics. For example - Babe Ruth had a t206 relic a couple of years back that most people assumed was a bat... Until green paint started showing up on them. The same color paint that showed up on Yankee stadium bench relics. The consensus became that they were clearly seat relics, but Topps would never confirm nor deny ( to my knowledge )

I was basically asking if the term game used is dead and everyone uses the term relic now instead. Back when game used was new, it was described as game used. It was even on the cards themselves. It said game used Jersey, hat, etc... So for me, I have always used game used as the term for cards with pieces of whatever in it. Its even titled as such for my game used section.

So, the term Relic never was used for my PC, but now cards are being listed with relic instead. Just making sure I didnt miss something.

It is confusing a bit. I know when I list cards on ebay I always put relic or game used depending on what card says. That way it can't be questioned that an "event worn" is being sold as a "game used".

I'm willing to bet it started around the time companies started inserting material NOT game used. Boxes probably started advertising a "relic card" or 2/box as opposed to "Contains one autograph and one game used or seat relic or wall relic per box!". I assume it just developed from a "hit per box" perspective and has kind of gotten as shady as "relics" themselves to be just a generic term now

Yeah, I agree with Brewerandy. It's a relic now because it limits liability should the beans ever spill about what is and isn't GU. Kinda makes me happy that most of Bagwell's stuff is from a time when gu meant gu and companies hadn't quite figured out that people would still buy their products even if the gu aspect was super sketchy.

On what cards does "Relic" replace the term "Game Used"?

Just off the top of my head I believe most if not all Triple Threads cards state Relic. I'm also pretty sure most Topps cards with material pieces from the years of 2011-current day also state the same. I know it has been interchangable as Andy said since the mid 2000's as well and I also agree with predator that it is mainly due to saving ass if any liability issues came up.

Why not just be clear and say "bit of cloth" or "bit of wood" and be done with it?

But don't most cards (Triple Threads being an exception) say "Game Used" somewhere on the front of the card?

Relic isn't really interchangeable with Game Used. Relic is a noun, Game used is an adjective.

"The relic contained in this card is not from any specific game, event or season" is letting you know that the Relic, the Game Used Memorabilia, or whatever the front of the card states, was not used in any specific game, event or season.

Im pretty sure topps eventually confirmed that on the Ruth, Duke Snider and one other player that the relics were indeed seat relics and at one time would allow you to send them in for free wax. I believe that was from 09 or 10 tribute? I cant remember but if it is important I can go thru my notes. I know I have it somewhere.

Why I typically don't buy any GU prior to 2006. There are exceptions but 98% of my Gu purchases are from before.

about 90% of mine are Panini or DLP game used cards. Alot of the newer panini cards can be traced back to an auction where the material was bought. or if you are not too greedy about how much info you want you can ask panini and they will tell you where it came from. Panini inherited DLP game used vault and they have given me info on older cards too. The only topps game used I own is from 2001-2003 tribute, and I believe that they are the real deal. Plus buying newer panini game used helps me because not many people like them so I get them cheaper. I can live without the logos.

Panini is great about answering questions like that - within reason. It's how I confirmed for myself that the Grove GU fro NT was hat.

its also the same hat that DLP used in Prime Cuts from 04-05. Those were the days when it actually said on the card what it was.

I found this in my notes. Copied from a Beckett story. It was Jackie Robinson not Duke Snider like I posted earlier.

Topps has confirmed that the following 5 memorabilia cards in the recently released 2009 Tribute Baseball
1
include pieces of stadium seat:
Babe Ruth Dual Relic
Bat / Old Yankee Stadium Seat
Babe Ruth Triple Relic
Old Yankee Stadium Seat / Uniform / Old Yankees Stadium Seat
Ty Cobb Dual Relic
Bat / Tiger Stadium Seat
Jackie Robinson Triple Relic
Ebbets Field Seat / Bat / Ebbets Field Seat
Mickey Mantle Triple Relic
Old Yankee Stadium Seat / Uniform / Old Yankees Stadium Seat
Topps will replace any of the above cards with a pack of 2009 Topps Tribute Baseball or comparable product for collectors that are not satisfied with their card(s).
In addition, every card in 2009 Topps Sterling Baseball features game-used bat and game-used uniform except for one subject—Carl Erskine, which features Erskine’s autograph with stadium seat. Topps will replace this card with a pack of 2009 Topps Sterling Baseball for collectors not satisfied with their card.
Moving forward, to ensure no confusion, stadium seat pieces will not be used as memorabilia pieces unless it’s part of a special stadium seat specific insert.
Please send all items intended for replacement to the address listed below. Please allow 2-4 weeks for delivery.
