No wonder most pitchers are opposed to wearing the new protective cap.
Alex Torres was the first MLB pitcher to wear it yesterday:

I have to applaud a man who cares more about protecting what is under the cap than how the cap looks..

I admire him that he won't get a cracked skull but his brain will still rattle around if he was whacked with a comebacker.

I wonder how many of those caps he has. 3-4 SD variants and 2-3 Chihuahua caps?

Laugh all you want I guarantee none of you little ******* would want to get hit by a MLB line drive.
It looks funny now but soon it will be the norm. I hope Wainwright or another top guy adapts this.
Personally I don't want to lose a guy on my team so I hope everyone uses it. Edit: Lisu posted earlier no offense intended

Oh, I totally agree - let's hope big caps make a fashion statement, but you all remember Pharrell's huge hat? :) very similar. We need to protect the pitchers.

I don't think anyone was making fun of him...regardless - I agree.

It appears as though he is now (somewhat) protected against line drives. Although with a hat like that, I think his biggest threat now is from turtles!

Not sure if anyone realized this, but he is a teammate of Alex Cobb, who was clocked in the head by a line drive last year

I am surprised that Brandon McCarthy, the guy who was smacked in the head by a line drive a couple years ago and ALMOST DIED, hasnt tried this before

didn't McCarthy tell the media he's not wearing this style cap because it's too heavy, bulky, not ready for primetime, etc?

I think if Alex Torres can pitch as good or better than he normally does with this cap will probably be a big selling point to bigger name pitchers that it's not too heavy, the mechanics won't be messed up, etc. and the cap will start to catch on.

Can someone provide me of an example where a pitcher was struck by a line drive anywhere on his head that this new cap is covering?

I honestly cannot think of one example.

I can only recall people getting hit in the face, which this will not protect at all.

I'm not being facetious, I just don't know.

This new hat, albeit progress by MLB, is just for the sake of 'doing something and showing they're trying' instead of actually protecting the player in my opinion, based on all of the samples I can think of pitchers taking come-backers.

This new hat does nothing to protect the temple, or any part of the face. You could still take one directly on the forehead, because the bill isn't invincible.

Good job for MLB for 'trying', but I don't see this helping much in the grand scheme of things.

Brandon McCarthy for one - it's apparent he was struck in the side of the head, not the face.

btw, from another post I made in this thread about how I thought McCarthy said the cap wasn't for him, I located an article about McCarthy saying the cap wasn't ready for use:

Yes, it may only work for about half of the comebackers to the head, but I think MLB has a major winner if they can get the rapper community to accept it! ;)
