While reading a card mag from the mid 90s, I came upon a story about this card.

I've heard about it for many years but that was the extent, until this article.

The article stated (from upper deck themselves) that only the earliest mariners cards were affected because the printed used the wrong color.

It also was mentioned that all the cards were thought to have been found before they were packed.

So after all these years, how rare are these?

This is another example of a common printing flaw (such as varying ink levels) getting variation recognition because it's an iconic card.

While not common, I can find other blue uniformed 1989 UD cards with purple variations in color. Yount for example.

If the 1991 Topps Chipper Jones were of similar iconic status as this, people would "whisper" of an early printed "orange" jersey version.

Very hard to distinguish especially on the web. I saw an auction a few months ago with it next to a blue
one and it looked obvious.

Add in the potential for 25 years of sun damage and I'd steer clear of this "variation"

As far as I know it didn't? He didn't have it labeled as a Purple Hat and he had it out for 50.. I tried to find it
but couldn't sorry.
