Wednesday Weekly

Not a very clever title, but my blog will be up every week on Wednesday. Short, sweet, and to the point. Today I am just going to give you an overview of what’s going on and how it’s going to go. Every Wednesday, I will be posting about sports and collecting. Obviously, it appeals to everyone because you visit a card collecting board and discuss collecting and sports.

Each week, we’ll take a look at different areas of collecting, whether it is player collecting, set collecting, team collecting, prospecting, vintage, or through the mail. It may focus on a particular player, team, or set any given week. We all have different areas that we collect in and some even overlap multiple areas. Even if an article isn’t covering something that you collect, it could help give you a better look inside that type of collecting.

While this is not another hot list, some weeks may focus on a particular player that is on a hot streak or having a great season. When a player gets the hot hand, it’s always fun to talk about and speculate. Such as Josh Hamilton; will he be able to continue to his production levels? Does he have a legitimate shot at the Triple Crown?

Next week, we’ll hit the first topic of discussion in this series. This will be ongoing and appear every Wednesday, so make sure to check it out and keep up with it. The purpose is to share good information and dive further into the hobby. You are an important part of this, so if you have any ideas or comments, please feel free to share them or contact me. If there is an area that you feel has been overlooked or would just like to see more on, just let me know.

A Rare Signature, Revealed

When 2010 Leaf Sports Icons Update, “The Chase for Shoeless Joe” came out the question everyone who had intrest in the product kept asking is “what does the Jackson autograph look like?”  Leaf answered that question today as the signature has been cut and is now a complete modern trading card.  The original document is from some sort of Greenville South Carolina court case, as the top reads “The State of South Carolina, The City of Greenville vs” followed by several lines that were used for defendant signatures.  With Jackson’s troubles this form could have been anything from a simple property dispute to a public intoxication case.  Another interesting aspect of the document is that Joe signed his name upside down on the form.  Make sure you take a look at the full document, as it’s one of the more interesting sports items I have ever seen.  Join in the discussion about this card in this thread.

This signature was not directly inserted in packs, but via a redemption program by the Leaf Company. Here is a quote from the Leaf website about how this card will be given to a collector.

“There will be FOUR of these FOUR LEAF CLOVER cards created. Three will be inserted in the packs and the fourth will go to the collector who presents for our review the MOST COMPLETE set of 2010 Leaf Sports Icons Update. One of these 4 lucky collectors will walk away from the 2011 National Sports Collectors Convention with this rare JOE JACKSON CUT SIGNATURE CARD! The other three lucky collectors will each win a FREE SEALED CASE OF OUR 2011 LEAF SPORTS ICONS CUT SIGNATURE product”

FCB National Coverage, SGC Interview

FCB Vintage Writer Chris Levy interviews Brian of Sportscard Guaranty.

The audio is a bit messed up, because we got too close to the machine that preps the slabs. It creates a really bad hum, so that you can’t hear the voices. Thanks to Tom The Ripper for editing the background noise out to a bearable level.
