FCB Weekly Hot List: September 30th Edition

1. Victor Cruz 2010 Playoff Contenders Autos

Cruz

Comments: I’m sure that I’m once again late to the party with a nickname but Cruz Missile sounds like a pretty stinking sweet nickname for a WR. As is the case frequently in the NFL, a younger guy gets their chance when a starter goes down with an injury. This is exactly what happened with Victor Cruz when Mario Manningham stepped aside for a week. Cruz had previously been in the slot position and was allowed to move outside with Super Mario’s injury. Now lets not get crazy, Victor Cruz is no Lou Gehrig and Mario Manningham is certainly no Wally Pipp but hey, 2 TDs get you noticed pretty quickly in the NY market and that’s just what Victor did last Sunday. The New York market isn’t the only market where it gets you noticed either, the other one is called eBay. Victor’s 2010 Contenders autos immediately went from $4 to in the $20s overnight. Some initially sold in the $40s shortly after the game but that wore off quickly and they’ve “stabilized” in the $20s. A 6x multiple is enough to land Victor in this week’s #1 spot.

2. Torrey Smith 2011 Topps Finest Patch Autos

Smith

Comments: It wasn’t like Victor didn’t have some competition for the #1 spot though. There was this fast speedburner of a WR named Torrey that had quite the day too. Now think back, it wasn’t that long ago the last name of that guy would have been Holt (no E in the first name either). Yet the times, they are a changin. And rather quickly in Baltimore, Torrey Smith played due to a Lee Evans injury and had his first 3 NFL catches go for TDs in the first quarter. I don’t usually make absolute statements but I think it is simply impossible to have a better start to your NFL career than that. Torrey had a crazy big day and saw the same kind of leap that Cruz Missile did with Finest Patch Autos popping from $4 up to $20.

3. Ryan Fitzpatrick Rookie Autos

Fitzpatrick

Comments: Sorry, he’s taken. That’s probably what you didn’t hear when you called Ryan Fitzpatrick’s name during your fantasy draft, he was available into the later rounds. However, each Sunday, as you watch the Bills game on TV you’ll notice that he’s not available, one of the few NFL players I’ve ever seen wear their wedding ring. I was one of those people who threw Mr. Ivy League into the “flash in the pan” category last year and figured both he and the Bills would go right back to mediocrity this year, however, nay nay. Both the Bills and Fitzpatrick are rolling (to the right and up the power rankings). Fitzpatrick is lighting up scoreboards and his cards are lighting up eBay. He does not have a wide selection of rookie cards due to his relatively unknown status at draft time but he sure does have an Exquisite Auto /150…it used to sell for $200 but no more, it now sells for $400.

4. Dan Johnson Autographs

Johnson

Comments: “With two outs, in the bottom of the 9th, the last chance for the Rays this season is Dan Johnson.” I strained my ears from the other room, who? Elliot Johnson? No, Dan Johnson again the TV repeated and then oh what did I hear, Dan Johnson hits his second homerun of the season, this one in pinch hit fashion. “The Giants win the pennant, the Giants win the pennant.”  You have to wonder if that homer could be that kind of moment…as a result, BINs started popping like popcorn on things like his Turkey Red Autos that previously saw no action at all.

5. Evan Longoria 2006 Bowman Chrome Draft Autos

Longoria

Comments: Or…will the “Giants win the pennant moment” be Longoria’s HR in extra innings? It does seem more likely. You know here’s the thing about Longoria this year. In the first half he was batting .239 with 11 HRs, I mean, that’s not exactly tearing the cover off the ball. He picked it up in the second half but even still, the average for the year ended at .244 but none of that matters anymore. He hit two of the most clutch HRs probably in MLB history and certainly in franchise history. Hits like that make a career and apparently a few collectors thought so too. Multiple BINs were hit and whether it was a $1500 Gold Ref 9.5 or a $300 Ref 9.5 Evan’s cards are moving.

6. Ryan Lavarnway 2010 Bowman Sterling Autos

Lavarnway

Comments: Ryan’s been on this several times this year. Usually, the commentary has included something about him hitting home runs and being a Red Sox player. Although people aren’t quite as happy to be Red Sox today (still have 2 WS in the past 7 years…I’m a Cubs fan, tear), it still matters in terms of hobby status. And the home run thing you ask? Oh yeah, he hit two and had 4 ribbies in his first game as the BoSox catcher. I’d suppose that would be enough to get a guy noticed right? Yup. Sterling Autos have fluctuated between probably $5 and $20 all season, last week they were at $10 and this week they are at $20.

7. Greg Jennings 2006 Exquisite Autos /150

Jennings

Comments: The Bills are 3-0, so are the Lions….Lions and Packers and Bills oh my. That’s right, in all the hype about resurgent franchises like Buffalo and Detroit, there is the pack just cruising along winning games. What strikes me about the Packers each time I watch is the sheer collection of talent they field each game but not only that, that collection of talent plays like a team. A big part of that is the Aaron Rodgers to Greg Jennings connection. Jennings makes extraordinary catches look routine and he makes routine catches (same can’t be said for some other guys who make extraordinary catches, cough, Dez Bryant, TB WR corps.). In spite of the fact that he is a fantasy stud, has a Super Bowl ring and plays on one of the most recognizable franchises in the world Jennings continues to be
underrated. However, some people are grasping the opportunity and snapping up some of his rarer rookies, like the Exquisite, a 9.5 /150 sold last week for $88 and this week one sold for $150!

8. Matt Moore 2010 Elite Autos

Moore

Comments: And speaking of guys who were off the radar, Matt Moore has made the Hot List – the Carolina QB is back! Oh, wait, not that Matt Moore? Oh, thaaaaaaat Matt Moore, the guy who JP just declared a Holiday for (i was certain JP’s post was related to the Jewish holidays happening). Matt has been named starter for game 1 of the division series and this is a case of yet another thing adding to the hype. Matt has come up from the minors and had stellar performances and now he’s going to have a chance to do so in the playoffs and if he pitches great, you can check right back here for him next week, same Matt time, same Matt channel. One of Matt’s Elite Autos hit $50 this week, up from their previous highs in the low $40s

9. Fred Jackson 2008 Score Rookies

Jackson

Comments: So we had Dan Johnson, about as plain a name as possible. Now we have Fred Jackson, who is next? Joe Smith? All the love for Ryan Fitzpatrick early in the article musn’t distract you from the fact that he’s not the only one to credit for the success of the Buffalo offense. Fred Jackson, who just a month ago was considered to be in hot competition for his job with C.J. Spiller has been nothing short of fantastic, he trails only Darren McFadden and Adrian Peterson in rushing yards this year. Fred played in Canadia prior to the NFL and doesn’t have a whole lot to choose from when it comes to rookie cards but never fear, Score is hear! Huge lots of his 2008 Score Rookies are getting lots of bids!

10. Darren McFadden High-End Rookie Autos

McFadden

Comments: Speaking of Mr. Mac, do you remember all the consternation about him a couple years ago around the draft? What kind of character did he have? Wasn’t his brother in the Little Rock Gang special on HBO, Matt Jones went to Arkansas, he did coke, some people do drugs in Arkansas, Bill Clinton is from Arkansas, did Darren know Bill? Did he know Monica? I’ve gotten a little carried away but so did all the commentators at the time. As usual, one person wasn’t scared (and also probably wasn’t lucid) and he took probably the biggest athletic talent on the board, Mr. Al Davis. This strategy has repeatedly bitten Al (Jamarcus…need I say more) and there was a time where it looked like it may again with McFadden. But that time has passed, McFadden is running like a grown man, right
over people and he has rocketed up the list of leagues best. His rookie cards, particularly the Exquisite and SP Authentic are really starting to heat up.

FCB Weekly Hot List – September 16th Edition

1.  2011 Topps Marquee Museum Collection Autographs.

These are some of the nicest autographs Topps has ever produced.  You really have to see them in hand to appreciate them.  They have a heavy feel to them, as well as a clean high contrast canvas for the signature.  I saw a Kyle Drabek pulled at the shop, and the customer could not stop talking about how nice the card looked.

Starlin Castro’s sold for $200 and I have a feeling that the run on these cards is just starting as people get a feel for how nice they are.  The market data on these cards is still quite new, and them getting the top spot is pure speculation on my part.  Normally when a product is expensive and gets negative press on the internet it gets ripped less.  The product getting ripped less leads to less of these hitting the market.  Less of these hitting the market means higher sell prices per card.

The first high end one to sell was Albert Pujols and I get the feeling that if the seller knew then what he knows now, he would of waited to list.  Lesson learned, when you pull a redemption card know what you have before you sell it.

2.  Cameron Newton NFL Rookie Autographs

I used a qualifier in my title.  This is because not all Cam Newton cards are created equal.  His Leaf Autographs are pretty strong especially when compared to his press pass and sage cards, but its clearly the Carolina Panthers NFL cards that have taken center stage.  The Current leaders in the club house are Inception, Finest, and Topps Platinum, with his superfractor selling for $2500.  We might be calling that buy it now a steal considering that a brave soul decided to auction his Topps Finest base superfractor and was rewarded for his bravery.

Cam still has one major question to answer, was his record breaking rookie debut a product of him being amazing, or the Arizona secondary looking like Afghanistan (bombed out and depleted)?

3.  Justin Verlander Rookie Year Autographs.

Almost every year there is one player who goes from good, to great, to best in the league.  This year it’s Justin Verlander’s turn.  MVP talk has shot his chrome autographs through the roof, and because hes a 2005 Rookie he has many options for autographs.  UD and DLP were producing cards that year and Verlander had as large of an autograph deal as anyone.  He can be found in many releases from all 3 of the major manufacturers.

My personal favorite of his is the UD Ultimate Collection auto.  I still think it’s a steal at $290 compared to his blue refactor autograph at around $350.

4.  Malcolm Brown Leaf US Army Autographs

Hook em Horns, and thank you Lord that college football is back and in full swing.  The previous statement is really difficult for a die hard Alabama fan like myself to say, but with the excitement of all that is the NCAA season it rolls off the tongue.

Malcolm is the immediate future of the Texas running game, and perhaps the present as well.  He has had a nice work load for a true freshman in his first two games, even when the second one vs BYU almost turned into an embarrassing loss.  His solid start did not go unnoticed by hobbyists as this copy of his leaf card sold for over $120.  As a side note, this card was pulled in the FCB store by FCB member hockeyfights who rips that product to hit his Georgia players.

Cards of other immediate impact players are doing well when they are listed, as people appear to be speculating these cards.  Marcus Lattimore’s 2010 card is the catalyst that got it all rolling.

5.  2011 Topps Marquee Jumbo Patches (Especially Henderson)

For all the shots that Marquee has taken recently, it has some really nice stuff in it.  You don’t hit often, but when you do it’s memorable.  These Hendersons are selling for around $280, and as someone who frequents a forum that has a Henderson player collectors thread, I am not surprised.  I know how crazy Henderson collectors can be.

Other patches are selling well too, as people are going the singles route instead of busting the product.  You gotta wonder what kind of singles prices will drive people to open more of the wax.

6.  Mike Tolbert Contenders Autos

The rumblin stumblin Tolbert made everyone take a second look at what makes a running back a star in his 2011 Debut.    An unheralded, undrafted college fullback turned professional running back has danced his way on to fantasy football teams with a 3 td performance in NFL week 1.  As fantasy football goes, so does the world of sports cards, as they are both hype driven markets.

This contenders card has doubled since week 1.  Part of that is due to the excitement of NFL football in full swing, and part of that is due to what happened on the field.  Either way, people still holding this card are glad it happened.

There are many other people who could have easily made this list.  Buffalo’s wonderlic genius Ryan Fitzpatrick, New England’s super Caucasian Wes Wellker, Green Bay’s Randall Cobb all deserve an honorable mention.  As far as next week goes, look for a lot of baseball to creep in as playoff runs intensify.  And as any hot list during the fall goes, expect the weeks worth of NFL standouts to be well represented.

FCB Weekly Hot List

1. Blake Griffin Rookie Autographs

Griffin

Comments: It is only one game but it seems like a year was worth the wait.  Blake looked fantastic in a Clippers uniform and I’d have to imagine that with players like him and Eric Gordon, Clippers fans haven’t been this enthused about the future of the team in a while.  All of Blake’s rookies are popping and the classics auto above which moved from about $45 to $70 is but one example.
