FCB Weekly Hot List – February 3rd 2012 Edition

Undoubtedly the biggest news in sports cards this week was the buzz about my interview on the FCB podcast last week.  Riiiiight, maybe not.  Although you shouldn’t do it for me, you should listen – it will even give you a little insight into the Hot List.

Paragraph break to reset, the biggest news in the hobby this week was the release of 2012 Topps, that’s right, base Topps – you know, the one that pretty much has base cards – a few crummy inserts here and there and that’s about it?  If you are thinking that, you are sorely wrong.  The competition in the card industry over the past few decades that has driven card companies to provide as much bang per buck as possible, has now even infected base Topps with Autographs, Coin Cards, Rare Parallels, Patches and Squirrels, that’s right, Squirrels.

I think there’s another thing that’s great about base Topps, nostalgia.  First of all, it’s been going now for what, 61 years or something like that (we’ve established many times that consistency = very good in the card industry, card manufacturers still sorting that out….), there’s just something about that first release of the new year that’s cool.  As a kid, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a few packs, see the new design and break a pack or two hoping for the one in a million autograph.  Now, about those autographs, if you were lucky enough to hit the one in a million auto, you likely would pull someone like Mickey Morandi.  The Cal Ripken Jr. you were hoping for?  Well, that’s an auto SP – which reminds me of the “Dumb and Dumber” moment where the desired woman says everything to Jim Carey but an all out no and he says “so you’re saying I’ve got a chance,” when we all know, he doesn’t.  Yes, that’s where we all were hoping for one of these big hit autos.  However, one year I struck gold, 3 retail Wal Mart packs and I pull an on-card Alex Rodriguez autograph out of 1996 Topps – what a hit, still to this day probably my biggest rush every in spite of having busted over 50 cases the last few years.

Now, the autographs are much easier to pull but the good ones..those are still tough.  Topps also benefits from it being a bit of a “dry” release time when there isn’t a ton else going on in the hobby but collectors are beginning to get wound up for the season.  You know what it also does, it provides fodder for the Hot List, yes, just like nuts for squirrels.

1. 2012 Topps Skip Schumaker Squirrel SSP

 Squirrel
Comments: Speaking of which, you have the infamous Squirrel card (does anyone reaaaallly care about Skip Schumaker).  This seems to have been a bit of a gimmick for Topps in these base releases – a card that draws attention (you recall Jeter and GWB a few years back) and is thought to be a good bit of a short print and ultimately winds up on the front page of yahoo.com.  Now here is an interesting thing – in the card world something like 100, well that’s short printed, however, even if a small chunk of America wants 100, one isn’t nearly enough to go around and prices skyrocket.  This happened to the Squirrel card and early sales were over $300, now they are around $100 and I’m sure will slide further but this is still a very nice value add for those opening packs.

2. Angelo Dundee 2011 Topps Allen and Ginter Auto

 Dundee
Comments:  A recurring theme we seem to experience on the Hot List is in the inclusion of famous, or even semi-famous players who pass away.  It’s kind of strange to be honest but we talk about price spikes and why they happen, regardless of the way they may have come about.  You’ve heard a ton about Muhammad Ali and his autograph values if you’ve followed sports cards at all.  What you might not have known up until this week was that his trainer, Angelo Dundee also had autographs and also had a following (for the record, I’m absolutely convinced a Rocky set with autographs of Mick, Paulie and the crew would sell amazingly well).  Angelo passed away this week and I’m guessing the amount of eBay searches went up significantly causing his Allen and Ginter autos to quadruple from $15 to $60.

3. 2012 Topps Jumbo Boxes

 Topps Baseball
Comments: For all the reasons I wrote in the introduction, Topps Jumbo Boxes have risen 25% or more this week and are moving like wildfire at local card shops and retail outlets alike.  See how that works, write intro, cut description of another slot short, sweet!

4. Christian Yelich 2010 Bowman Sterling Autos

 yelich

Comments: If you follow prospects, this isn’t the first time you’ve heard of Christian Yelich.  However, you also know if you follow prospect sale prices that there has been a rising tide of sales over the last month that seems to be driving notable prospects that make top 100 lists and things of that nature, much higher in price.  Christian is one of those guys – what happens is in the offseason prospectors have more time to sift data, lists and analysis and determine who they feel to be under priced, it appears that Christian was one of these guys and his 2010 Bowman Sterling Autos have risen from $8 to $12

5. Bryce Harper 2011 Bowman Chrome Autos

Harper

Comments: Bryce’s Chrome Autos have started picking up steam.  It’s rare that people would ever consider a Chrome Auto that sells for $150-$200 depressed in value but that’s where Bryce was.  As the season nears more eBayers begin to consider Bryce’s massive talent and what that might mean this year.  Here’s the thing, Bryce has the chance to go bonkers at almost any time and given the reputation that precedes him this will mean a TON of media coverage when/if that happens.  A ton of media coverage in tandem with some huge hype will mean that $200 is going to seem awful cheap for a Chrome Auto.  Bryce’s Blue Refractor Autos have moved from the $450 range to over $600 in the past week.

6. Bubba Starling 2011 Bowman Chrome Draft Autos

Bubba

Comments: One of the things that annoys me a bit at times is when a certain player has one card and the information comes out that there will be a second card made.  Reactions like “omg sell sell sell!!!”, “guess I better list those” and “those gotta go now” abound.  I have to imagine the people who made a fortune off Jason Heyward Elites, Mike Trout Elites and others must laugh.  Typically the instigator of these statements is a players Chrome issue that comes out after some other set has released an autograph.  Well, now Topps is doing it to themselves with this USA contract.  Bubba’s 2011 Bowman Chrome Draft Auto was not his first auto, that was in 2010 Bowman Chrome (also 2010 Topps USA, 2010 Bowman Sterling and so on). And what are collectors saying?  “I’ll take both, thank you.”  Is what they are saying.  Bubba’s Chrome cards of all varieties are going nuts.  Now that’s easy to say when a player is so hot, I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of Chaz Roes (search that name in the forum if you don’t understand too) but in the mean time, people are starting to pay near $70 for Bubba’s Base Chrome Autos

7. 2012 Topps Blacks /61

 Black Border

Comments: Parallels of base cards that don’t shine typically don’t sell for much either.  Topps Blacks, now /61 are certainly a large exception.  The Placido Polanco above sold for $30 – now, I have nothing against P^2 but the first thing that comes to mind when I hear his name isn’t “He has a large hobby following.”  It’s more like “yep, role player that does nothing in hobby land.”  Except when he’s a part of a big set like Topps Black and in that case, he gets some bids and it is entirely possible that the seller who sold that card represents the only person who will receive a $30 payment tied to the name Placido Polanco this year.

8. Tom Brady High-End Rookies

 Brady

Comments: I know Charlie Sheen was describing his own life when he said “winning.”  But he would have probably been more accurate were he referring to Tom Brady’s football career.  I have no soft spot for the Patriots, nor the Giants but I have to hand it to Brady and Belichek, Rodgers has his moment, Brees his, Manning his, Manning his and others but at the end of the day Brady and Belichek are always there.  They just win and heck, somehow they seemed to do it even a little under the radar this season.  Brady may very well be the Michael Jordan of football cards price-wise as his cards soar every higher.  In the last few weeks there have been 4 sales of Contender Auto rookies over $4k, that’s right, $4 grand.

9. Prospect Autos

 Starling Chrome Auto
Comments:  I rarely write about something as general as “prospect autos” but in this case I think it is merited (and I have little else to write about at this point).  If you have been following or bidding on prospect autos you’ll know that as the season draws nearer, the card prices seem to be rising.  Whether it is autographs from 2011 Bowman Draft or cards I wrote about like Christian Yelich above – prospect autos are on the upswing.

10. The Cold List

 cold
Comments: That’s right, I’m taunting you.  I often receive comments “where’s the Cold List?”  Well, that’s not exactly what I’m tasked with writing each week but it is something that I use as filler from time to time.  I think it does maybe make some interesting points about human psychology.  Everyone loves a good diss.  Mitt Romney hates poor people, Newt Gingrich believes the moon is made of cheese, Barack Obama’s best friend is Fidel Castro and he loves Trotsky and Lenin.  All exaggerations but none the less, I think in the love of the Cold List, we’ve probably made the point of why negative advertising works and character slams are more effective than interesting ideas.  I’m also not that mean to taunt you with a Cold List mention and not throw something out there.  However, it’s not card related, you know who’s cold?  Kendrick Perkins is cold because this week, he may have become the ultimate victim of posterization, ever. You know who else is cold, me, I sold a Blake Griffin Gold Refractor Topps Chrome 9.5 for $300 a few years back, that’s a $1k card now.

FCB Weekly Hot List – January 6th 2012 Edition

Since the last Hot List, something very significant has changed, its a New Year! Although I don’t believe that any specific resolutions were made here on the Hot List, nor on FCB in general, there is certainly plenty to be excited about.  I talk to FCB’s owner (cgilmo) fairly frequently and 2012 is going to be a big year for the website.  Most notably, a mobile application that is in development currently – that’s right, you can read these interwebs on an application on your telephone.

A large part of that mobile application will be blog related content, the Hot List at the head of that of course (my own opinion) but hopefully that will be just the beginning – if you feel you are a writer and want to do it for FCB, this is the time to step forward.  Anyway, I digress, on the plenty to look forward to front, in the time from last week to this week, we had the Hot List candidate well go from dry to flooded.  Much of this is related to collectors looking forward to things and in some strange way it is with many names that we’ve seen before.

1. Matt Flynn 2008 Rookie Autos

Flynn

Comments: If a year ago, you had to pick a team whose individual players you were going to buy, with the intention of selling their cards later, the Packers would have been the right move.  We all know about Aaron Rodgers but don’t forget about the huge price spikes seen by Jordy Nelson, Clay Matthews, Charles Woodson (Panini Autos), Jermichael Finley, James Starks and Matt Flynn (he’s been on this list before), yes that Matt Flynn the guy who backs up Aaron.  See the thing about Matt is although he’s behind a guy who is playing the QB position as well as it has ever been played, when he gets in, he does his best Matt Cassel impression.  What I mean by that is that when the system and pieces around you are so good, it almost seems hard not to succeed.  However, last Sunday, Matt didn’t just succeed, he beat a playoff team, put up nearly 500 yards of passing and threw 6 touchdowns, yes six.  Many of his rookie autos quadrupled after this performance and you have to know that if Aaron Rodgers would go down at some point Packers fans at least believe they have a viable back up option.

2. Joe Webb National Treasures Autos

Webb

Comments: To say the Vikings QB situation over the past few years has been interesting is an understatement.  The Brett Favre drama almost goes without saying but even beyond that – Tavaris Jackson’s ups and downs, the signing of Donovan McNabb who went from solid QB to not even backup worthy  in a couple years, Christian Ponder’s great games and rookie moments and much more.  However, one guy who has taken advantage of the opportunities he’s had is Joe Webb.  Joe made this list last year after running for a couple TDs and here he is again after a good performance last Sunday.  National Treasures autographs went from $8.5 to $30 this week.

3. Kyle Lowry 2006-07 Exquisite Autos

Lowry

Comments: I really liked Kyle when he came out of Villanova, however, he just never seemed to put it together in Memphis, a team that always seemed to have a lot of young talent but never really got results.  There’s also the whole Mike Conley Jr. thing and a lack of understand about who is THE point guard.  However, lack of understanding no more – Kyle is the guy in Houston and had a much better year last year and so far has taken it to another level this year – currently averaging over 15 ppg and 10 apg.  Kyle’s once unloved Exquisite Autos were selling in the $30-$50 range but are now rising – one hit an all-time high this week of $100.

4. Andrew Bynum SPX Auto Rookies /1499

Bynum

Comments: For a guy who is often injured and still hasn’t hit his full potential, Bynum’s name is certainly in the new a lot, usually related to trips to the injured reserve but the fact is, he’s a Laker and that gets you some publicity no matter what.  It’s not like Bynum has been awful, he average 15 and 9 in 2009-2010 and 11 and 10 in 2010-11 but people are expecting Dwight Howard like production from this guy and that’s exactly what they are getting in the 4 games he’s played in 2011-12, a double double in each game and on the average 22 and 16.  If he keeps this pace up, uninjured, the sky is the limit for his rookie autos.  SPXs were selling for $16 a piece and then a lot was purchased at the price of $40 per, that will look cheap if he keeps up the pace.

5. Victor Cruz 2010 Playoff Contenders Auto RC

Cruz

Comments: That’s right, the guy who was likely undrafted in your fantasy draft wound up with 1536 yards of receiving and 9 touchdowns this year.  Everyone expected an enormous year from Hakeem Nicks and he fell into the shadow of Victor Cruz – who had 17 yds receiving total in his first two games and 1519 in his next 14.  Victor’s Contenders autos were at one time SO CHEAP, single digit dollars last year, heck, they were in the $40s last week and after yet another huge game rocketed up into the $70s with one touching $82!

6. Ricky Rubio 2009-10 Exquisite Autos /225

Rubio

Comments: Ricky was drafted and then stayed in Spain, disappointing for those who pulled cards like the one above out of packs of Exquisite.  However, now Ricky is playing for the T-Wolves and if people who snagged those Exquisite Autos were patient enough to hold onto them, they are seeing the fruits now.  Just a week ago these were at $250 and now they are at $450.  Ricky is averaging 9 points a game for the T-Wolves and 7 assists a game but many believe that’s just the start.

7. Chris Ivory 2010 Playoff Contenders Auto

Ivory

Comments: Like Flynn, Webb and Cruz, Chris Ivory has seen this list before but it has certainly been a while.  Chris had a few great games for the Saints last year that gave his 2010 Contenders Autos some attention, in the meantime, he got lost in the mix of Pierre Thomas, Darren Sproles, Mark Ingram and all the other offensive weapons the Saints have.  Then he reappeared recently with a touchdown in the last week of the season, his first of the year.  If you know one thing about the Saints it is that anyone can score TDs for them.  So its certainly possible that Chris’ role (and likely card values) increase headed into the Playoffs, a week ago his Contenders were under $10 bucks and now they can’t be had for under $20.
8. Trevor Bauer High End 2011 Bowman Chrome Draft Parallels

Bauer

Comments: I’m not sure if someone is on a hoarding run or not but Trevor’s high-end Draft parallels and other rarer parallels are scorching.  Just a week ago you could get a blue for $150 and one went off last night for $290.  There are many who believe Bauer will be given a shot at the big league rotation in Spring Training this year and if that’s the case, things are only going to get hotter.
9. Xander Bogaerts 2011 Leaf Auto Rookies

Bogaerts

Comments: Xander is the top prospect on a big market baseball team and he only has a couple autos – you know what that is, a recipe for high prices.  Xander’s an international signee who made it into a couple Leaf products this fall and is now making it onto a lot of top prospect list at a premium position.  Often times when a flood of new product comes out, a month or two later you see certain players start to rise as collectors have more time to evaluate the price points and that’s just what is happening to Xander.  With limited releases there is a chance for more upward movement if Xander performs well this year, in the mean time his Valiants went from $8 to more like $15 this week.

10. Bubba Starling 2011 Bowman Chrome Draft Autos

Starling

Comments: Does anyone remember Jesus Montero in 2008 Bowman Chrome Draft?  Big name prospect who due to redemptions was cheaper than many expected initially, once chrome autos were in hand, prices rose.  Exact same thing happened to Bubba this year, redemptions were $35-$40 and now in hand autos are selling in the mid-$50s.

11. Kevin Love 2008-09 Topps Chrome Parallels

Love

Comments: After an injury ended his year last year, Kevin is back with a vengeance.  6 games, 6 double doubles, averaging 26 points and 15 rpg, I really believe he could keep that up, as insane as that sounds.  The 2008-09 Topps Chrome product has already produced insane prices in the form of Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook but here comes Kevin Love – parallels are up about 50% this week and Orange Refractors which aren’t exactly rare /499 are selling for $50.

FCB Weekly Hot List December 30th 2011 Edition

It is time for the last Hot List of 2011.  Typically around this time of year, material is difficult to come by, the NFL is just about to wind up, the NBA is in full swing, there’s a lack of cards for NCAA football and basketball and it is smack in the middle of baseball off-season.  More often that not, what’s on the Hot List is driven by on the court/field/floor performances.  People tend to get the most excitable about these things at the beginning of the season and therefore, all sports being in mid-season form means a little less Hot List fodder.

Ah, but you are saying, “Phil, I know where you are headed here, you had 3 Clippers on the list last week and…” and…you are right, the NBA regular season started, albeit a little late this week and as a result, guys who all of a sudden appear to be good, or at least much better than expected immediately starting catching collector’s and fan’s eyes alike.  This would be DeAndre Jordan last week and more to come this week and in the months ahead.

Another element of the Hot List that I particularly love is the suggestion thread this is where you the FCB reader and member tell me about things that I’d never know otherwise.  Some things will go un-noticed until you raise them to my attention and frankly, I think others read this suggestion thread and go scurrying off to commons boxes to see what they have of the named player.  If you get a chance, throw your suggestion into the Hot List hat and see what happens.  What typically happens is that I cull through the items listed in the thread, combine them with those in my head and then see what we’ve got.  Amazingly enough, I had enough in my head to round out the list this week but should there not be enough at some point in time, you’ll see the re-emergence of the cold list but not this week.

1. Norris Cole 2011-12 SP Authentic

Cole

Comments: Case in point, when Norris Cole was suggested I figured someone had jumbled up prospect names like Gerrit Cole and Daniel Norris but nay nay, they meant Norris Cole.  OH, that Norris Cole, the guy from Cleveland State, yeah!  Still not awake yet?  Yeah, me neither.  However, what you really need to know about Norris is that he was a previously unknown rookie who is now making it known that he’s going to score some points and get some minutes for the Miami Heat.  Yeah, that Miami Heat, the Heat that are going to win oh 6, 7, and 8 championships or more, yeah those guys.  All the heroes need sidekicks, whether it be Robin, Watson or others heroes, they need sidekicks and star players need role players.  Being a role player on a winning team can be lucrative, ask Derek Fisher.  Norris’ only card, the 2011-12 SP Authentic went for $.50 last week and some were over $5 this week.

2. Victor Cruz 2010 Playoff Contenders Autos

Cruz

Comments: And you thought that WRs hit their stride in their 3rd year in the league.  Victor’s here to tell you that the first year can be just fine (yes, fine is defined as 1358 yards in receiving (3rd in yards) and 78 receptions).  Not only is Victor doing that but he’s doing it for a New York market team.  This guy was an undrafted free agent and now he’s scoring 99 yard touchdowns on Sunday.  Victor has been on this list several different times as cards like his contenders autos have jumped up and down and this week he’s here again because his Contenders $25 last week and this week some hit $50 raw and a few 9.5s hit near $100.

3. Claude Giroux Young Guns RC

Giroux

Comments: Leading the NHL in points is no small thing.  Doing it for a team that most believe is laden with young stars (the Flyers) is also no small thing.  The additional thing with hockey guys is they often have that go to card – Young Guns – it isn’t hard to run down the list of recent Young Guns sales and see the pop for Claude.  His Young Guns were selling for $10 the previous week and are now selling for $24.  I have an article on Young Guns that will be going up within the next week and on the unique nature of this set – they are seriously one of a kind, which is exactly what Claude is trying to be leading the league in points this year.

4. Drew Brees 2001 Auto Rookies

Brees

Comments: Drew is already one of the most recognizable faces and quarterbacks in the NFL.  He’s had prolific season after prolific season, won a Super Bowl and is generally revered as an all around great guy.  All this being said to make the point that Drew’s cards already carry some nice sale prices and it would take something very significant to make the sale prices increase even further.  Well that something happened when Drew broke the single season yards passing record last week adding yet another notch to his belt.  UD Graded Autos in 9.5 for were up to $265 this week, in previous weeks they’d only been at or near $160.

5. Ty Lawson 2009-10 National Treasures Auto

Lawson

Comments: I watched Ty Lawson play college basketball and he struck me as a huge prospect.  The athleticism, the speed, the scoring.  However, his first two years in the league yielded average results at best but now that he’s the main guy with the Nuggets I think it is very possible we’ll see something quite different this season.  If the first two games are any indication, I might be right, Ty’s taking a lot more shots (13 per game) and scoring more points, 21 per game.  Ty’s National Treasures Patches are often bland such as the white one pictured above but that isn’t stopping collectors from grabbing them via BIN for $170, definitely a new high.

6. Jordan Eberle 2010-11 UD Young Guns

Eberle

Comments: While Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has been getting a lot of press regarding young hockey phenoms, Eberle has been quietly piling up a tremendous season in the points category.  He has more points than his #1 line compatriots Taylor Hall and Mr. Nugent-Hopkins and now collectors are starting to take notice.  Young Guns were selling for $25 and are now into the mid-$30s, should Eberle continue to pile up these stats chances for larger increases totally exist.

7. Bubba Starling 2011 Bowman Sterling Autos

Starling

Comments: Name a prospect that coincides with the year 2011 – you’d have to say Bryce Harper right?  I mean he was the cover boy of nearly every Topps product and the big hit in nearly as many.  Bryce’s presence however is not big enough to overshadow Bubba who from a card sales perspective appears to be the guy to have.  Topps wound up insert his cards as redemptions into 2011 Bowman Chrome Draft but didn’t make the same mistake in Sterling.  Starling’s Sterling Autos are live and people are snapping them up.  Refractors are north of $65 and the rare stuff like the Purple Autos /10 are over $300.  Outside of Harper and Hosmer no one is really in the ballpark.
8. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Certified Autos

Nugent

Comments: In number 6 on this list, I mentioned Nugent-Hopkins being on the same line as Eberle.  Nugent-Hopkins is an 18 year old phenom who is already on the NHL leaderboard as far as points scored.  Nugent-Hopkins previously made this list for non-auto’d non-GU’d  Young Guns that are selling for $75-$100 and now makes it for auto jerseys out of Certified that sell for very nearly $250.  Anything new released of this guy all season long is going to be scorching hot.
9. Cam Newton 2011 Rookie Cards

Newton

Comments: Speaking of young guys who put up absurd numbers, how’s Cam Newton for you?  He may eclipse 4000 yards passing in his last game of the year, already has 20 TDs passing,, 674 yards rushing, 14 rushing TDs and is pretty much any fantasy footballers dream come true.  Jamarcus Russell he is not, not at all and the Panthers have to feel like geniuses for drafting the #1 guy who some felt like they got stuck with.  Cam has invigorated that franchise and the card market has felt the same kind of adrenaline.  His most basic cards are selling for great money now, base chrome Topps Chromes for $8+, Chrome 9.5s for $30+, Chrome Ref 9.5s for over $50 and the numbers just get crazier from there.

10. Bryce Harper 2011 Bowman Sterling Autos and Parallels

Harper

Comments: So right now, if you eBay search “Bryce Harper” in the cards category you’ll find over 2,000 results which is pretty much insane given the fact that the guy has played a part of a season of AA baseball.  Topps signed Bryce to an exclusive contracts and has been getting their moneys worth to say the least.  This is what makes it even more amazing that Gold Refractors non-auto out of Bowman Sterling are still selling for over $300.  Bryce, is still THE  guy you want to pull something really nice when opening a product and still drives sales for wax sellers across the globe.
