2010 Topps Five Star Football

Five Star football from Topps has caused quite a stir in the football world.  After a few years of not being able to launch a steady high end football brand beyond Triple Threads Football Topps has finally carved out a place in the market with Five Star.  Gone are the days (hopefully) of stickers over jersey material, among other things that have made the high end from Topps sputter a bit in previous years.

Five Star Football provides a beautiful selection of rookie and veteran content that is a breath of fresh air for football collectors who identify with the Topps brand.  Our box did not disappoint as well, yielding a jersey autograph of Jerome Bettis.  Bettis has one of the nicest signatures in the hobby, as you can see in this image of the card we hit.  In addition, there was a fold out patch autograph of Broncos receiver Demaryius Thomas, a two color patch of Larry Fitzgerald, and super thick base cards of Chris Johnson, Matt Ryan, and Brett Favre.  There is tons of big hit potential in this product, as any high end release should have.  If you are in the mood for high end football, go pick up a box and maybe hit one of these…

Check out the football boards this week, for your shot at winning your very own box!

1. 2010 Contenders Football SSPs

Okung

Comments: The posters on the football boards have done an awesome job of compiling a lot of information to get to a preliminary list of SPs.  As these SPs have become apparent, prices have started to rise.  Especially the super short prints.  No-name WR’s that are thought to be super SPs have hit near $300.  Russell Okung, a name more are familiar with went from $22 last week to $180 this week.

Player Drawn Sketches Added to Topps Five Star Football

Anyone interested in high end football cards has Topps Five Star Football on the watch list.   This product is the industry’s hope to fill the void left with the lack of a NFL UD Exquisite product for 2010.  If the early card images are any indicator of the kind of high quality hits that we can expect in this product, then it probably won’t disappoint.  I have seen enough on card autographs, inscriptions, premium patches, and elegant fold out cards to make me want to pre order.

A recent addition to the product are athlete drawn sketch cards.  These cards can range from the quite cool, to the down right awful.  If the players get creative, like Ryan “Master Shake” Mathews you have a unique collectible that die hard player collectors would love to own.  If a player half-asses it like Bryan Baluga you have something that no one wants to pull, and that no one wants to buy on the secondary market.  That Baluga card is so bad that the eBay auction had the picture of the back as the primary picture.  At least the back has an autograph.

The sketch card checklist features Tony Romo, Reggie Wayne, Vincent Jackson, LaDainian Tomlinson, Maurice Jones-Drew, Roddy White, Matthew Stafford, C.J. Spiller, Matt Ryan, Mike Williams, Tim Tebow, Aaron Hernandez and others.  When the athlete doing the sketch is creative and puts some effort into it, the sketch becomes a good hit.  When the athlete half-asses it and doesn’t care, neither will the people pulling it.
