Sports Card Hot List for April 21st 2013

The NBA Finals, the NFL Draft, Major League Baseball, NHL and warmer weather. What more could you ask for if you are a sports fan? This week’s list is all baseball, but next week, you can expect a rise in some football cards with the NFL Draft.

Mike Trout2012 Panini Prizm Baseball

Panini Prizm Baseball has gotten mixed reviews about its look, but it sells for good money. Gold Prizms /10 get the most hype and usually out-sell the autographs in the set. Prizm has a nice mixture of legends, veterans and prospects to appeal to all baseball collectors. A Gold Prizm Mike Trout (pictured) sold for a high premium of $510. This is pretty crazy money considering it is not even a rookie card. Yankees players are also popular with a Bernie Williams autograph SP sold for $355 and Derek Jeter gold Prizms are selling for $300-$400. Prizm has also brought controversy because they just released a “2012″ product in April of 2013, but regardless, it is a very popular product.

Brandon CrawfordBrandon Crawford Rookie Autographs

Brandon Crawford is mainly known for his glove, but recently, his bat has been hot. Crawford was hitting .352 earlier in the week, but that has since dropped to .317. Last year, he hit .248.

When his bat was hot, so were his cards. His 2011 Bowman retail autograph was selling for $15-$25 when last week they were only averaging $5. His 2008 Elite school colors autograph /25 sold for a solid $75 when it was selling for $40 pre-Opening Day. It is not likely that he hits over .300 by the end of the season, but if he does, he’d be in the top 10 shortstops in the league.

Andrew Luck2012 Topps Five Star Football Inscription Autos

Topps has not yet figured out how to match UD Exquisite and Panini National Treasures and contend for the honor of having a players absolute best card.  There are some aspects of the set that they do right.  There is no better example of this than the inscription autograph set.  It gets better when players get creative and put something besides a bland stat or the obvious super bowl mvp inscription.

The pictured card here is Andrew Luck with a “Chuckstrong” inscription as a show of support for his head coach Chuck Pagano’s leukemia research campaign.  Creativity is rewarded as this card sold for $775.  People still love the unique.

Chris Johnson2009 Bowman Chrome Chris Johnson Autographs

Chris Johnson, not the football star, but the third baseman for the Atlanta Braves is off to a hot start. Although he might not be Chipper, but he is hitting like him recently. Leading the National League with a .418 average, Johnson has been stroking. And yes, he was also in the Justin Upton trade in the offseason, so it is looking even more lopsided now.

Johnson’s cards have seen a nice jump because of his hot start. 2009 Bowman Chrome refractor autographs were only hitting $7 last week and are up to $26 this week. X-fractor autographs are hitting $32 and they were around the $18 mark last week. He is making the best out of his opportunity with Atlanta.

Oswald Arcia2011 Oswaldo Arcia Rookie Autographs

Oswaldo Arcia made a brief appearance in the Bigs, and then was promptly sent back down and then sent back up because Darin Mastroianni went on the DL. He has only 1 hit in the big leagues, but he is a promising prospect.  The Twin’s willingness to bring him up might mean that they will do so again this season.  Be ready for a solid week in the majors to lead to some big sale prices.

His 2011 Bowman Platinum autographs jumped from $10 to $20 after his call up and his 2011 Leaf Metal Draft and Valiant autographs doubled as well.

JP Arencibia2008 Bowman Chrome J.P. Arencibia Autographs

Arencibia has been all muscle early in the season by hitting 7 home runs. In the power-hitting Blue Jays lineup, JP seems to be underrated because he usually hits 6th. He hit 18 home runs last year and should surpass that by the All-Star break if he keeps up the pace. However, with power comes strikeouts, and he is leading the league.

Arencibia’s cards have increased in price over the past couple of weeks. Before the season had started, his 2008 Bowman Chrome autographs were selling for $5-$8, but now they have reached the $20 mark. Other refractor autographs will continue to rise as long as his power still shows.

Nolan Arenado2010 Bowman Chrome Nolan Arenado Autographs

The Rockies are off to a hot start and so is one of their top prospects. Nolan Arenado is batting .389 with 3 home runs in Triple-A Colorado Springs and is a favorite to get called up this season. If he keeps tearing it up, it could be sooner rather than later.

His cards have seen a jump because of his start. 2010 Bowman Chrome autographs were selling for $25 last week and are up to the $35-$40 mark this week. Refractor autographs are also up from $47 to $60 this week.

Mac Williamson2012 Panini Elite Mac Williamson Autographs

Although he is only batting .218, Williamson has shown promise in his first couple of weeks in San Jose. The San Francisco Giants prospect hit 9 homers in only 33 games last year and he has hit 2 this year. Collectors are beginning to realize that this guy has excellent power because his 2012 Elite autographs are up from $3-$5 a couple of weeks ago to $10-$15 mark currently. Recently, a gold die-cut /5 autograph sold for $126.

Still Hot

Matt Harvey 2010 Bowman Chrome Autographs

Third week in a row he is on the Hot List. Harvey out-dueled Stephen Strasburg on Friday by going a solid 7 innings. Fans in the ballpark chanted “Har-vey’s Better!” His cards have not slowed down a bit. A red refractor autograph BGS 9/10 sold for $2,700 and even 2010 Bowman base cards are selling for $7 a pop.

Justin Upton 2006 Rookie Autographs

Leading the majors with 9 home runs. 2006 Bowman Sterling Autographs up to $55. 2006 Bowman autographs still around $100. X-fractor autographs are over $200.

Tony Cingrani 2012 Bowman Chrome Autographs

Solid big league debut against Jose Fernandez going 5 innings with 8 strikeouts and only 1 earned run given up. 2012 Bowman Chrome autographs still hitting between $45-$50.

Sports Card Hot List for April 14th 2013

What’s hot this week? Baseball. What’ll be hot next week? Probably baseball. But the week after, we can expect the rise in football prices after the NFL Draft, especially with the new Leaf Draft products. Panini did a great job with National Treasures Football as they did with baseball with some crazy sales right off the shelves, but it is a 2012 product. It makes you wonder, how long can the company wait to release a last year’s product?

cingrani2012 Bowman Chrome Tony Cingrani Autographs

He’s not a fireballer like Aroldis Chapman, but this Reds prospect is striking out hitters left and right. In his first two starts for Triple-A Lousiville, he has recorded 21 strikeouts in just 12 1/3 innings. Scouts still have questions if he will be a big league caliber starter, but he is trying to prove them wrong.

After earning the number one spot on Baseball America’s Prospect Hot Sheet, Cingrani’s cards have seen an uptick. 2012 Bowman Chrome autographs are up to the $46 mark after only hitting $15 last week. A blue refractor autograph recently hit $100 as well. Not bad for a future relief pitcher, huh? Other of Cingrani’s autographs can be found in the new 2013 Topps Tribute and 2012 Leaf products. Cingrani also appears to be on the verge of being called up to the Bigs.

Gattis2012 Topps Heritage Minor League Evan Gattis Rookie Cards

Since Brian McCann has been out for the beginning of the 2013 season, Gattis has been an excellent replacement. With a physique like Paul Bunyan and an odd batting stance, Gattis has become popular among Braves fans. He has an interesting back story too by being out of baseball for 4 years and did a series of odd jobs like being a janitor or working for a pizza parlor. Gattis is hitting .324 with 4 home runs so far this season.

As a result to his crazy background, Gattis has gotten a lot of media attention consequently making his card prices go up. And when I say card, I mean only one card. The only set he is in is the 2012 Topps Heritage Minor League, which even base cards are selling for $10-$12 a pop and black bordered Short Prints are around the $50 mark.

national treasures football2012 Panini National Treasures Football

Like their baseball product that released last month, Panini National Treasures football is off to a hot start after recently releasing. Some great looking patches and interesting pieces of memorabilia being shown off in this product. Notable sales include a Rookie Shield 1/1 autograph of Ryan Tannehill for 10K, and the pictured RGIII patch autograph /25 for $3,300. Panini did a great job gathering these pieces, and the product looks sharp, just like National Treasures Baseball.

scott2001 Upper Deck SP Sign of the Times Adam Scott Autographs

Scott became the first Aussie to win the Masters on Sunday, and as a result, his cards are on the rise.

His 2001 Upper Deck SP Sign of the Times autograph sold for $12 just a couple days before the win, and after the win, they were hitting $40.

zunino2012 Bowman Chrome Mike Zunino Autographs

Zunino also made Baseball America‘s Prospect Hot Sheet sitting at the number 6 spot by hitting .385 with 4 home runs in Triple-A. With Jesus Montero struggling for the Mariners, he could soon be called up to the Majors.

With his hot streak, his cards are on the rise. Zunino’s 2012 Bowman Chrome autographs are up to $65 and refractor autographs are up to $105. Last week, they were at $50 and $80, respectively. Other autographs of his are hot as well such as 2012 Elite, and 2012 Leaf Draft products.

Carl Crawford Topps Traded Autograph1999 Topps Traded Carl Crawford Autographs

A year ago, Carl Crawford would be on the “not so hot” list if there ever was such a thing. Today, he has rejuvenated his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers after having a brutal time in Boston. Crawford is starting to get back to his old form by batting .372 and 2 stolen bases.

Before the start of the season, Carl Crawford’s 1999 Topps Traded autographs were selling for around $15-$18, but now they are up again by topping $33. We will see if he can get back to his old form, but it’s got to be better than what he did in Boston.

AJ Pollock2009 Bowman Chrome AJ Pollock Autographs

Before the season started, many thought another Diamondbacks outfielder (Adam Eaton) would be the front-runner in the Rookie of the Year race, but AJ Pollock has showed that he wants the gig. Pollock has taken advantage of the opportunity left with Eaton’s injury by hitting .282 with 2 home runs.

Before the season started, AJ Pollock autographs could have been had for cheap. I’m talking $2 cheap. Now 2009 Bowman Chrome autographs are up to the $15 mark and 2009 Elite autographs are at $10.

Still Hot

So instead of repeating the same players week after week, if they are still hot from the previous week, they will go on this list with brief explanations.

2012 Bowman Chrome Matt Harvey Autographs

Base autographs up over $100 after another gem on Saturday night. BGS 9.5/10 auto sold for $158. Had a no-hitter through 7 innings.

Justin Upton 2006 Rookie Autographs

Now has 7 home runs on the year. A 2006 Bowman Chrome Blue refractor autograph recently sold for $402 and base autographs are hitting $100.

Bryce Harper Autographs

Early MVP candidate, with 5 home runs and hitting .348. 2011 Bowman Chrome raw autographs still well over $400.

Chris Davis Autographs

Still mashing, still hot. 2007 Elite autographs still selling for over $85.

2012 Topps Valor Video Break With Mobile App Demo

Topps Valor certainly wins the award for the most well designed Tin in sports cards, with apology to Pinnacle Inside of course.  Seriously though any sports card product you need a can opener for just shouldn’t exist.  Never the less these tins are beautiful.

2013-03-22 14.13.48

I decided to video this break so I could have an excuse to demo the FCB mobile app that really does not get the use that it should.  Click for the video break, stay for the tutorial and see how easy it is to upload box breaks to FCB.
